GDC 2009: DSi Will Introduce Two Separate Cart Types

The Nintendo DSi is being posed as an upgrade to the older systems, not a replacement, but Joystiq reports that users who didn't upgrade might have to be careful when shopping for new games. At a Game Developers Conference panel today, DSi project leader Matsato Kuwahara revealed that the company will be releasing two different kinds of DS cartridges. "DSi Cards" will only work on the DSi itself, while "DSi Enhanced Cards" will work on all DS systems, with extra features when played on the DSi.
The good news is that this strategy will allow developers to take advantage of DSi-specific features, like the camera. The bad news is, it risks splintering the market for the several million DS Lite owners. It also might confuse shoppers who are less tech-savvy into picking up the wrong type of cart. Given that the DS Lite has been adopted by millions of casual players, Nintendo will have to be extremely clear with its packaging to keep the angry letters from coming.
